‘Guns across the Border’ tells inside story of Operation Wide Receiver CI“Operation Wide Receiver,” a precursor to “Operation Fast and Furious” wherein U.S. guns were bought by straw purchasers and “walked” under the noses of ATF investigators into Mexico, has been the subject of numerous Gun Rights Examiner reports. The central figure in those reports was Mike Detty, a gun writer, a firearms dealer, and the confidential informant who literally risked his life over the course of years to do what he believed was right, only to find the obvious criminals weren’t the only ones he couldn’t trust.

Detty has written about his role in a book that’s so new it doesn’t even officially release until next Wednesday. “Guns across the Border: How and Why the U.S. Government Smuggled Guns into Mexico” tells his story in an easy to read narrative that’s nonetheless engaging from the outset, and that held me throughout.

‘Furious’ report slams ‘disregard’ for public safety as DOJ officials quit

A bombshell report released Wednesday on Operation Fast and Furious faulted a range of federal agencies for the failed anti-gunrunning program and accused officials in charge of a “disregard” for public safety. In the wake of the report, one Justice Department official resigned and another retired.

The sprawling report by the department’s inspector general is the most comprehensive account yet on the deadly operation which allowed weapons to “walk” across the U.S.-Mexico border and resulted in hundreds of firearms turning up at crime scenes in both countries.

The report says Attorney General Eric Holder was not made aware of potential flaws in the program until February of last year. But the report cites 14 other department employees — including Criminal Division head Lanny Breuer — for potential wrongdoing, recommending the department consider disciplinary action against them.

One congressional source told Fox News the report was “more brutal than was expected.”

Darrell Issa to Sue Eric Holder Monday

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa plans to sue Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday for refusing to provide documents related to the “Fast and Furious” gun-smuggling operation.

“The committee expects to file the civil contempt suit against the attorney general Monday,” a Republican source said. The suit will be filed in the federal district court for the District of Columbia.

The action is the latest escalation in the dispute between House Republicans and the Justice Department over the documents, which relate to a botched gun-smuggling operation.

Washington Post shows agenda in treatment of Fast and Furious

Yesterday’s release of the first part of a joint staff report detailing findings in the Congressional investigation of Operation Fast and Furious did not result in headlines by The Washington Post, let alone a buried independent story at this writing. Instead, its editor chose to publish an Associated Press piece parroting an accusation by the Justice Department that the “Republican Fast and Furious report engages in distortion.”

This does not serve to impartially inform a readership interested in knowing all the facts about the government investigation. It would also appear to be a gross violation of basic canons of journalism adopted by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, as well as an apparently “false and misleading statement” CEO Donald E. Graham makes to investors of his publicly-traded company that “Our dedication to top-quality journalism is important to the people at the Company…We all share a belief that the free flow of information is essential to a successful democracy.”

Congressional Fast and Furious report released in advance to chosen few

The first of a three-part joint staff report on the Operation Fast and Furious “gunwalking” investigation prepared for House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa and Senate Committee on the Judiciary Ranking Member Charles Grassley was issued today in Washington. D.C.

“This report chronicles the fundamentally flawed firearms trafficking case from the perspective of the United States Attorney’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives,” the preface states. “Part two will look at the devastating failure of supervision and leadership by officials at Justice Department headquarters, principally within the Office of the Deputy Attorney General, and within the Criminal Division. Part three will address the unprecedented obstruction of the investigation by the highest levels of the Justice Department, including the Attorney General himself.”

Something went right!

The House of Representatives voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. The vote was 255 ayes, 67 nays, and 1 present vote.

Seventeen Democrats joined with 238 Republicans to vote for the contempt charges against Holder, while over 100 Democrats did not vote, most of them ceremoniously walking out of the House chamber in protest.

This is good news. If the NRA holds these knuckleheads’ feet to the fire in that this issue is related to the Second Amendment, then they will make this a bipartisan vote to hold AG Holder in contempt of Congress.

Pressure on House Dems as NRA to score Holder contempt vote

Allahpundit briefly mentioned this last night, but it’s worth a closer look — as it may be a bellwether of bad news to the Obama White House.  Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT), who faces a tough challenge in November from Republican Mia Love, has announced that he will vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt tomorrow, assuming that the Obama administration can’t cut a deal before the vote in the morning.  He’s the first Democrat to break ranks, but he may not be the last:

Rep. Jim Matheson will vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for withholding documents pertaining to a failed Justice Department sting that let guns get into the hands of drug runners.

Matheson, D-Utah, announced his position Tuesday, joining House Republicans, such as Utah Reps. Rob Bishop and Jason Chaffetz, who have railed against Holder’s reaction to the congressional probe into the Justice Department’s “Fast and Furious” operation. One of the lost guns was later used in the murder of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

“It just compounds the tragedy when both sides play politics instead of releasing the facts. The Terry family, the public and Congress deserve answers,” Matheson said. “Sadly, it seems that it will take holding the attorney general in contempt to communicate that evasiveness is unacceptable.”

Since the lying SCOAMF has pulled the executive privilege card on Fast and Furious, one gets curious about whether, or not the President was involved in this fiasco, or if he just trying to cover for that incompetent fuck of an AG he appointed.

Either way, the SCOAMF is involved now and Issa is calling him out on it.

Issa just needs to go ahead and start the impeachment proceedings now.

Issa Letter Hammers Obama on Operation ‘Fast and Furious’

The chairman of the House oversight committee investigating White House involvement in the botched “gun-walking” program that led to the 2010 death of U.S. Border Patrol agent accused President Obama on Monday of downplaying his involvement in the program or intentionally obstructing the Congress’ inquiry.

Rep. Darrel Issa’s letter to Obama questioned the legal basis of the White House move to withhold subpoenaed documents from the Government Reform and Oversight Committee under protections afforded Obama by executive privilege. The Justice Department denied Issa’s committee the subpoenaed documents last week, prompting the GOP-led committee to vote along party lines to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

The full House is scheduled to consider the contempt citation this week. The White House contends it’s legally entitled to withhold documents related to internal deliberations on policy and advisory discussions among Obama’s senior advisers. It was the first time Obama, who pledged a new era of government transparency, has exerted executive privilege.

Issa said the assertion of executive privilege, which occurred after 16-months of negotiations between his committee and Justice officials over documents related to the gun-walking program called Fast and Furious, raised two troubling questions.

It’s pretty pathetic when a sitting President invokes Executive Privilege (EP) over something that he supposedly had nothing to do with. If he didn’t have anything to do with Fast and Furious, then why is invoking EP?
If, as he claims, he had nothing to with, or any fore knowledge of F&F then how in the hell can he invoke EP?
Looks like shit, smells like shit, tastes like shit. Guess it’s a good thing they didn’t step in it.

House committee suspects ‘Fast and Furious’ cover-up
Answers may be in 1,300 pages it wants

The House committee investigating Fast and Furious has received more than 7,600 documents from the Justice Department, but Republican lawmakers say none addresses who approved the gunrunning probe, who failed to stop it before a U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed and why department officials initially lied to Congress about it.

Now the panel has its sights set on an additional 1,300 pages of documents it believes will answer those questions and also expose a political cover-up at Justice.

Nevertheless, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s quest for records got more complicated this week when President Obama asserted executive privilege and refused to turn them over — and the committee in turn voted to recommend holding Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. in contempt of Congress.

Together, they are the crux of what has become the biggest separation-of-powers battle of the Obama administration.

Murdered border agent Brian Terry’s parents accuse Obama officials of ‘hiding something’

The parents of murdered border agent Brian Terry told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Thursday that they think Attorney General Eric Holder and other Justice Department officials are “hiding something” in their response to the botched anti-gunrunning operation Fast and Furious.

The operation let illicit guns “walk” in the hope of tracking them to bigger traffickers, but many of the guns just disappeared into Mexico. Two of those guns were later found at the crime scene where Terry was killed in December 2010 just north of the border.

A House panel voted Wednesday along party lines to recommend holding Holder in contempt of Congress for not handing over a trove of documents related to Fast and Furious, and GOP leaders are considering a full House vote. President Obama has asserted executive privilege in keeping many of the documents out of public view.
