Liberalism Radicalized: The Sexual Revolution, Multiculturalism, and the Rise of Identity Politics

By Kevin Slack

Abstract

Beginning in the 1950s, a more radical form of liberalism emerged in the academy that sowed the seeds for the sexual revolution and multiculturalism. Neo-progressivism mobilized the New Left of the 1960s, transformed American politics, and continues to dominate the cultural and political conversation today. It combines what neo-progressives call personal politics the idea that American citizens have a right to all forms of self-expression and cultural politics the idea that cultural groups are entitled to special status together as the twin pillars of a new identity politics. As a result, citizens today have more, not less, freedom from government in the realm of sexual expression, and the American electorate has been fractured into various groups.

In the past two decades, a new, more radical form of progressivism has taken over American social and political life, even finding its way into the White House. Fresh instances of this new progressivism appear every day. For example:

  • At the 2012 Democratic National Convention, progressives officially supported same-sex marriage as a civil right and unofficially rejected the word God in their platform;

  • President Barack Obama, labeled the “First Gay President” by Newsweek for his support of gay rights, has instructed the Attorney General of the United States not to defend the Defense of Marriage Act; and

  • Vice President Joe Biden has said that discrimination against transgendered persons is the “civil rights issue of our time.”[1]

…I have a dream.

I dream of a day when racist douche bags like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are ignored by the people they supposedly represent. They are a bigger problem to race relations than any I’ve ever seen, Obama isn’t far behind on this.

They are a disgrace.

At any rate, this is supposed to be a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King. I have the utmost respect and admiration for the man and what he endured.

Freedom is never assured. It must be fought for.

The Dream Derailed

Fifty years after the March on Washington, civil rights activists have shredded Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream.Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of over 200,000 people. The crowd had gathered to protest the dangerous state into which race relations had fallen in the summer of 1963. King’s memorable speech was part of “the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom,” and its solemn cadences ring as powerfully today they did 50 years ago. No one who heard it could forget its immensely powerful assault on segregation, the demise of which no respectable person—northerner or southerner—mourns today. No one should forget that King’s speech was a major catalyst in moving a still reluctant nation to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Freedom vs. Jobs

The large praise heaped on the speech should not, however, blind us to the difficulty of reconciling the two major goals of the March on Washington. A campaign for both jobs and freedom will ultimately have to choose between them. King did not use the word “jobs” once in his speech. But he did insist that this nation redeem its promissory note to all citizens of “the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” And he keenly recognized that freedom and the universality of rights are necessarily paired.

He observed, “Many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.” From there, he neatly segued to two burning issues of the time: voting and public accommodations, which eventually became Title I and Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 respectively.

…I really need to change the title to something else. I’m not keeping up with it everyday,

I try, but shit happens.

…of Mexico.

A “three-layer security line 140 miles from southern border aimed to fight drug, human trafficking” into Mexico.

Now there’s a fine “how-you-do” for you. This is absolutely outrageous.
Why are we not doing more with OUR southern border.
You know, to maybe fight drug and human trafficking coming in from Mexico.

That would be a great plan.

Instead, they offer us amnesty for illegal aliens, promises of a fence, and more enforcement.
Once again, the idiots in Washington, living in their own little shit hole, ignore the American people and do whatever the hell they want to do.

When the hell is enough, enough?
Fire all these bastards!

Obama Administration Considers Plan to Bolster Mexico’s Southern Border
Three-layer security line 140 miles from southern border aimed to fight drug, human trafficking

Obama administration and Mexican government officials recently discussed creating a three-tier security system designed to protect Mexico’s southern border from drug and human traffickers, according to U.S. officials.

The border control plan calls for U.S. funding and technical support of three security lines extending more than 100 miles north of Mexico’s border with Guatemala and Belize. The border security system would use sensors and intelligence-gathering to counter human trafficking and drug running from the region, a major source of illegal immigration into the United States.

According to the officials who discussed the U.S.-Mexican talks on condition of anonymity, the Mexican government proposed setting up three security cordons using electronic sensors and other security measures along the southern Mexican border, along a line some 20 miles from the southern border, and along a third security line about 140 miles from the southern Mexican territorial line.

The plan would be funded in part through the Merida Initiative, a U.S.-led anti-drug trafficking program that has involved nearly $2 billion in U.S. funds.

Border security was a major topic during the visit to Mexico last month by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Commissioner Thomas Winkowski, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Alan Bersin.
