I’m a day late on the story, but it’s worth the post.

USS Constitution to sail under own power for second time in over a century

(AP) BOSTON – The world’s oldest commissioned warship will sail under its own power for just the second time in more than a century to commemorate the battle that won it the nickname “Old Ironsides.”

The USS Constitution, which was first launched in 1797, will be tugged from its berth in Boston Harbor on Sunday to the main deepwater pathway into the harbor. It will then set out to open seas for a 10-minute cruise.

The short trip marks the day two centuries ago when the Constitution bested the British frigate HMS Guerriere in a fierce battle during the War of 1812. It follows a three-year restoration project and is the first time the Constitution has been to sea on its own since its 200th birthday in 1997.

Before that, it hadn’t sailed under its own power since 1881. The Constitution is periodically tugged into the harbor for historical display.

I won’t post a lot today, I think I will be too busy to throw much your way today. I’ll try, but no guarantees.
Here’s today’s reading list.

If this helps the troops, then I’m all for it.

There are too many suicides by military personnel lately. It’s not a comforting statistic.

US Army grants $3 million for anti-suicide nasal spray research

For those feeling down in the dumps, the US military now has a solution: an anti-suicidal nasal spray that delivers antidepressant chemicals to the brain.

The US Army has awarded a scientist at the Indiana University School of Medicine $3 million to develop a nasal spray that eclipses suicidal thoughts. Dr. Michael Kubek and his research team will have three years to ascertain whether the nasal spray is a safe and effective method of preventing suicides.

The research grant comes after the Army lost 38 of its soldiers to suspected suicide in July, setting a record high. So far in 2012, the Army has confirmed 66 active duty suicides and is investigating 50 more, making a total of 116 cases.

The Army’s suicide rate is at the highest level in history, with more American soldiers taking their own lives than being killed by the Taliban. The Pentagon reported in June that suicides among soldiers averaged one per day this year, surpassing the rate of combat fatalities.

…are now allowed to be armed.

WTF?

Why weren’t they armed from the get go? They are in a fucking war zone. You carry your weapon loaded at all times. Even if you are a fobbit.

Sometimes the PC mentality of the military really does get people killed. It’s gotten 10 Soldiers killed in the last two weeks.

The PC generals need to get shit canned.

Morons.

All coalition troops at Afghan bases now armed around the clock
By Barbara Starr

The uptick in attacks by Afghan security forces against coalition troops has hit home, with all troops at NATO headquarters and all bases across Afghanistan now ordered to carry loaded weapons around the clock, CNN learned Friday.

Gen. John Allen, the NATO commander in Afghanistan, ordered the move, according to a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the orders. The order, made in recent days, was divulged amid two more so-called green-on-blue or insider attacks Friday.
