92-year-old Verona man shoots intruder at home

VERONA — Earl Jones had just turned off his new TV shortly after 2 a.m. Monday when he heard a bang in the basement.

The 92-year-old Boone County farmer walked eight paces to get his loaded .22 caliber rifle from behind the bedroom door. He unwrapped a beige cloth and returned to the living room, sitting in a chair with clear view – and shot – of the basement door, waiting with the gun across his lap.

Some 15 minutes later, when he heard footsteps moving closer up the stairs, he raised the rifle to his eye. The intruder kicked open the door. Jones fixed his aim on the center of the man’s chest and fired a single shot. The Boone County Sheriff later announced the death of the intruder, Lloyd (Adam) Maxwell, 24, of Richmond, Ky.

Another story from David Codrea on the armed citizen.

Armed citizens prove protective benefits of guns
By David Codrea

A little over a week ago, I talked about two law enforcement professionals, a Texas sheriff and an Ohio judge who have cast aside the “Only Ones” party line we’ve come to expect from so many in the upper ranks and advise us to arm ourselves.

Here’s just a sampling of stories that have come into my inbox in the last day of folks who take such advice to heart:

From The Marion Star:

A 24-year-old man accused of breaking into a home in Yorkshire Estates on Tuesday morning was held at gunpoint by the homeowner until sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Gun Control or, in control of his gun?

Plantation, FL — Last week police were called to investigate an
attempted armed robbery:

A 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a Subway
shop in Plantation , Florida late Wednesday, killing one and critically
wounding the other, is described as John Lovell, a former helicopter
pilot for two presidents.  He doesn’t drink, he doesn’t smoke, and he
works out everyday.  Mr. Lovell was a man of action Wednesday night.

According to Plantation police, two masked gunmen came into the Subway
at 1949 North Pine Road just after 11 p.m.  There was a lone diner, Mr.
Lovell, who was finishing his meal.  After robbing the cashier, the two
men attempted to shove Mr. Lovell into a bathroom and rob him as well.
They got his money, but then Mr. Lovell pulled his handgun and opened
fire.  He shot one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other in
the head.

A couple on the gun issue.

Over at Castle Argghhh!:

Speaking of those things I mentioned…

I wish you great success as President, Mr. Obama, although there are some specific issues that I admit I wish you less success, and in fact, failure, as I believe our definitions of what constitutes a successful endstate differ somewhat dramatically.

What follows would be one of those caveats.

Brady Sends Obama Its Pre-Inauguration Wish List

Friday, January 16, 2009

No one, including the Brady Campaign, seriously believes that Barack Obama was elected president because of his support for gun control. But Brady is pretending that it provided Obama the margin of victory in November, and has provided him with a very long list of gun bans and other restrictions that it expects from him in return.

If for no other reason, Obama might want to tell Brady “no,” because if he were to do their bidding, they would be sure to demand that he do even more. That’s demonstrated by Brady’s statement that their current request “is not intended to present an exhaustive list . . . but does provide a starting point.” It includes:
