Cap Taxes, Trade Congress

I’m all for cap ‘n trade; it’s a nifty idea. Simply splendid. Positively stupendous. Brilliant beyond brilliant.
I just have a different take on the whole notion. I prefer very stringent caps on taxes and spending, coupled with a 2010 trade-in of the entire U.S. Congress.
What in holy tarnation do those people think they’re getting paid to do?
While these Roman throwbacks attempt to save the planet, pagan style, so they can set up their Darwinian nirvana on earth, the rest of us have enough sense not to try to make the state our church.

Let’s cap and trade oxygen!

Enough already with carbon cap and trade. I say let’s cap oxygen, and then tax any family that can’t achieve the Average Family Oxygen Target of 80% BOOTS (Before Obama Oxygen Trading Scheme). Remember, if you weren’t inhaling all that O2 you wouldn’t be belching out clouds of noxious CO2. Yuck. Yes, I know oil refineries smell bad and coal looks dirty. But none of that carbon would ever see the light of day if it weren’t for all the oxygen you suck in, you greed bucket. So let’s get down to root causes.
Here’s the goal. If we can only get five billion people around the world to breathe 20% less oxygen per person, we would Save the Planet from Global Warming. Just like that!
Twenty percent less O2 going into your body means 20% less CO2 out-gassing, atom-for-atom. It’s just like cutting down the world population by a billion polluting oxygen hogs.

I can’t imagine the hysteria that the left would be going through if this were reversed. I think I’ll start refusing to give customers my services based on their view of global warming. If they believe it is manmade and the cap and trade scam is the way to save the planet, then I will refuse to do any work for them. Sounds good to me.
Climate of hatred: Prominent scientist refused service due to skepticism

Prominent MIT physicist and global warming skeptic, Richard Lindzen, was recently refused the services of a Boston-area art appraiser because of global warming.
As Lindzen described in an e-mail:
In our recent house fire, an 18th century oriental rug was burnt, and we needed an appraisal of its value for our insurance. We were referred to a dealer, [name withheld], who agreed to do the appraisal. However, when my wife, Nadine, brought him the burnt rug, he rudely turned her away saying that he had sent me an email explaining his position…
Here’s the text of the art appraiser’s e-mail to Lindzen:
I am sorry to inform you that after some consideration, I’ve decided not to perform the appraisal service that you’ve requested. Your writing on the subject of global warming is offensive to me personally, and I feel that I would have difficulty being an impartial appraiser of value given my view on the subject.

Earlier this week we were, ahem, relishing the story about how some Burger King restaurants in Tennessee had been displaying signs saying “global warming is baloney“.
A journalist working for the Memphis Flyer, a local news weekly, had photographed some of the signs and then approached Burger King’s press office for an explanation. It responded by saying the sign’s message didn’t match the corporation’s views on global warming and it said it had asked the franchise owner to take the signs down. End of story.

Think twice about ‘green’ transport, say scientists
You worry a lot about the environment and do everything you can to reduce your carbon footprint — the emissions of greenhouse gases that drive dangerous climate change.
So you always prefer to take the train or the bus rather than a plane, and avoid using a car whenever you can, faithful to the belief that this inflicts less harm to the planet.
Well, there could be a nasty surprise in store for you, for taking public transport may not be as green as you automatically think, says a new US study.
Its authors point out an array of factors that are often unknown to the public.
These are hidden or displaced emissions that ramp up the simple “tailpipe” tally, which is based on how much carbon is spewed out by the fossil fuels used to make a trip.
Environmental engineers Mikhail Chester and Arpad Horvath at the University of California at Davis say that when these costs are included, a more complex and challenging picture emerges.

The Alice in Wonderland World of the Greens

“Curiouser and curiouser”, said Alice. Not an unnatural response to the wholesale departure from reality she experienced at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. And we have precisely the same head-scratching response to the refusal of green ideologues to grasp the energy realities of our age, especially as they affect a realistic role for renewable energy sources.
The Green Gospel
If any group has set the agenda for Green-ism in our age, it is Greenpeace. In 2007 Greenpeace produced a film ‘The Convenient Solution‘, which succinctly put the case for renewable energy’s ‘urgent’ solution before the world. Introducing the film on their website Greenpeace makes this statement, “We all know that, to stop climate change, we need to stop burning fossil fuels”. Within minutes of the film getting under way we are informed of the “unnecessary dependence on fossil fuels.” What the Green gospel also says “we all know…” is that: mankind burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide, a ‘polluting’ greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to (anthropogenic) global warming. Thus, if we don’t quickly change our evil, fossil burning ways dire prognostications will soon befall us.

Exactly a year ago President Bush’s Interior Sec. , Dirk Kempthorne, under pressure from greenies and global warmists, invoked the U.S. Endangered Species Act to list polar bears as “a threatened species.” The listing was idiotic; in fact polar bear numbers have doubled worldwide over the past 30 years. And three years earlier Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, acting on the advice of people who actually live around polar bears, had filed suit against the Dept. of the Interior to prevent the listing.
Alas Gov. Palin’s efforts only forestalled the listing. But at least Sec. Kempthorne saw through part of the greenie-weenie ploy and called their bluff: “This listing, ” he warned last year, “should not open the door to use of the Endangered Species Act to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, power plants, and other sources.”

The Coming Ice Age

Those who ignore the geologic perspective do so at great risk. In fall of 1985, geologists warned that a Columbian volcano, Nevado del Ruiz, was getting ready to erupt. But the volcano had been dormant for 150 years. So government officials and inhabitants of nearby towns did not take the warnings seriously. On the evening of November 13, Nevado del Ruiz erupted, triggering catastrophic mudslides. In the town of Armero, 23,000 people were buried alive in a matter of seconds.
For ninety percent of the last million years, the normal state of the Earth’s climate has been an ice age. Ice ages last about 100,000 years, and are punctuated by short periods of warm climate, or interglacials. The last ice age started about 114,000 years ago. It began instantaneously. For a hundred-thousand years, temperatures fell and sheets of ice a mile thick grew to envelop much of North America, Europe and Asia. The ice age ended nearly as abruptly as it began. Between about 12,000 and 10,000 years ago, the temperature in Greenland rose more than 50 °F.

Solar Energy Meets Greenies and Big Labor

It was a squirrel, a labor group and an environmental group along with California’s tough environmental regulations, which helped kill a hybrid solar power plant project for a Mojave Desert city.
It seemed like a good idea at the time. The City of Victorville prides itself on being a green city. They recently bought a number of hybrid vehicles for their city fleet. And they are located in the Mojave Desert which receives large amounts of sunshine every year.

WASHINGTON — “Fervently” is how America will henceforth engage in talks on global warming. So said the president’s climate change negotiator Sunday in Germany, at a U.N. conference on reducing carbon emissions. This vow was fervently applauded by conferees welcoming the end of what AP’s news story called the Bush administration’s “eight years of obdurate participation” in climate talks.
Reducing carbon emissions supposedly will reverse warming, if it resumes after the current period without warming, a period that began, according to statistics published by the World Meteorological Organization, 11 years ago. Regarding the reversing, the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change has many ambitions, as outlined in a working group’s 16-page “information note” to “facilitate discussions.” For example:
“Tariffs can be lowered to grant special preference to climate-friendly goods, or they can be maintained at high levels to discourage trade in GHG (greenhouse gas)-intensive goods and services.” The working group says protectionism “in the service of climate change objectives” might virtuously “shelter domestic producers of climate-friendly goods.”

Liberal Authoritarianism and Earth Hour

Got up this morning and shoveled 4 inches of Global Warming off my driveway.
I updated the old weather joke because it actually did snow 4 inches last night — a “Midwest Express” that roared through the plains bringing a springtime blast of winter’s dying breath. We are likely to have a couple more of these little surprises before we can officially celebrate the advent of the warming season. It better get here quick. Opening Day is a week from Tuesday.
I also altered the cliché above in honor of “Earth Hour” – one of those earnest, silly liberal attempts at “raising the consciousness” of people about one cause or another. Who can forget such planet altering events as “Hands Across America” or “Live Aid” concerts, or the “Let’s Give More Money to Africa so the Kleptocrats can fatten their Swiss Bank Accounts” concert? The total impact on public policy and probably on people’s “consciousness” was about the same as watching an episode of “Dancing with the Stars” — without the advantage of seeing scantily clad women twirling and dipping like Whirling Dervishes.
