I keep hearing a commercial on the radio. “As California goes, so does the rest of the nation.” That is more truth than anything. Just look at this bankrupt state. Now look at what Obama is doing. The path he is taking is exactly the same as was done in California. California is about to go bankrupt because of its love of the left’s idea of socialism. Guess what? The canary is the mine just died.

Once, California was known as the “Golden State.” No more. It’s struggling with a fiscal crisis of epic proportions. And voters are so disgusted with the ineptitude and waste of a state legislature dominated by liberal Democrats that they are poised to vote down a $16 billion tax increase and a slew of propositions allegedly intended to beat back fiscal Armageddon.
If residents of the other 49 states haven’t focused on California’s plight yet, they should. In a real sense, California has become liberalism’s “canary in the coal mine.” It is an instructive – and frightening – warning of the toll exacted by the kind of leftism now in vogue in Washington, D.C..

California residents have long assumed that they could successfully transfer responsibility for their safety to the professionals in law enforcement and criminal justice. But the state’s economic downturn has led to drastic drop in property and sales tax revenues, and now municipalities are being forced to cut public safety budgets to the point that Californians must confront a harsh reality.
A recent article noted how fiscal issues required Contra Costa County to cut back on both Sheriff’s services and in the prosecutor’s office. Fortunately, last-minute negotiations, along with a voluntary pay cut by District Attorney Robert Kochly, averted the proposed policy of not prosecuting certain misdemeanors. However, there is only enough funding to continue prosecutions for another four months. Nor was there any eleventh-hour miracle for the Sheriff’s Office.

Those who ignore the geologic perspective do so at great risk. In fall of 1985, geologists warned that a Columbian volcano, Nevado del Ruiz, was getting ready to erupt. But the volcano had been dormant for 150 years. So government officials and inhabitants of nearby towns did not take the warnings seriously. On the evening of November 13, Nevado del Ruiz erupted, triggering catastrophic mudslides. In the town of Armero, 23,000 people were buried alive in a matter of seconds.
For ninety percent of the last million years, the normal state of the Earth’s climate has been an ice age. Ice ages last about 100,000 years, and are punctuated by short periods of warm climate, or interglacials. The last ice age started about 114,000 years ago. It began instantaneously. For a hundred-thousand years, temperatures fell and sheets of ice a mile thick grew to envelop much of North America, Europe and Asia. The ice age ended nearly as abruptly as it began. Between about 12,000 and 10,000 years ago, the temperature in Greenland rose more than 50 °F.

What to call black people has to be confusing to white people. Having been around for 73 years, I have been through a number of names. Among the polite ones are: colored, Negro, Afro-American, black, and now African-American. Among those names, African-American is probably the most unintelligent. You say, “What do you mean, Williams?” Suppose I told you that I had a European-American friend or a South-America-American friend, or a North-America-American friend. You’d probably say, “Williams, that’s stupid. Europe, South America and North America are continents consisting of many peoples.” You might insist that I call my friend from Germany a German-American instead of European-American and my friend from Brazil a Brazilian-American rather than a South-America-American and my friend from Canada a Canadian-American instead of a North-American. So would not the same apply to people whose heritage lies on the African continent? For example, instead of claiming that President Barack Obama is the first African-American president, it should be that he’s the first Kenyan-American president. In that sense, Obama is lucky. Unlike most American blacks, he knows his national heritage; the closest to a national heritage the rest of us can identify is some country along Africa’s gold coast.

The current furor over the three water-boarded terrorists is right out of the old Greek idea of excess leading to hubris leading to nemesis leading to destruction. Do we really wish to revisit 2002?
In that seminal year 2002-remember Bali, the intifada bombings, the 800 Russian hostages, John Lee Mohammad, Jose Padilla, the Buffalo Six al-Qaedists, and the lingering fumes from Richard (”shoe-bomber”) Reid and the anthrax letters?-Democrats were chest-thumping about keeping us safe. To be fair, everyone was. Bush had a 62% approval rating, and gained in the mid-term elections that hinged on matters of national security. The new Department of Homeland Security was having us remove shoes and throw away liquids from our carry-on luggage.

Comedian Wanda Sykes headlined Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, D.C., and, like some of her predecessors, walked a tightrope without a net – the difference being that her rope was only three inches off the ground.
The White House correspondents’ dinner traditionally features a headlining comedian who usually makes jokes at the expense of the president and/or his staff who are looking on helplessly like sitting ducks. The most cutting of these in recent memory were Stephen Colbert in 2006, and Don Imus ripping apart the Clintons back in 1996.

Obama to Brits: Talk and we’ll cut you off

After the Obama administration released the OLC memos on enhanced interrogation techniques, our British allies must have figured that the US would not object to publicizing the techniques used on Binyam Mohamed, now in the UK after being released from Guantanamo Bay. Barack Obama clarified his position on exposing intel techniques in a letter to the Brits that more or less told them to do what he says, and not what he does. Eli Lake reports that Obama threatened to cut off cooperation between American and British intelligence if a British court publishes a seven-paragraph memorandum outlining Mohamed’s treatment:
“If it is determined that [her majesty's government] is unable to protect information we provide to it, even if that inability is caused by your judicial system, we will necessarily have to review with the greatest care the sensitivity of information we can provide in the future.”

Duty takes three sons far off; love keeps them close

Karmen Callaway dropped off her three sons at the National Guard Armory in Covington, where teary men and women embraced one last time in early morning light.
Karmen was not allowed to linger. Go home, her uniformed sons ordered, knowing that saying goodbye would be especially tough for their mother.
She had felt the sting of this moment before when, just a week after Mother’s Day in 2005, she sent her two oldest sons, Ryan and Jared, off to Iraq.
This time, they were taking their younger brother Seth with them, to the unforgiving mountains and valleys of Afghanistan, where they will serve for a year in the same unit, Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment.
From Covington, where Company B is based, the Callaway boys left for six weeks of training at Camp Shelby, Miss., in March. They will deploy later this month.
Karmen, 46, is proud of her sons’ love for their country. She knows it is part of their heritage. But there’s no denying today is another Mother’s Day blemished. By longing, anxiety, uncertainty.

I often wonder why the left always cringes in horror at the thought of water-boarding a couple Islamo-fascists, other than the fact that they are fascists themselves, there seems to be no other reason than to undermine the ability of America to defend itself and others as has been demonstrated over and over again.
America has been one of the few countries on this planet that tries, almost to a fault, not to inflict unnecessary casualties in war. Since the Gulf War, our collateral damage and killing of innocent life has been dramatically low. It still happens occasionally, but war is hell, after all.
War is Hell

Our role, as children of a Loving God, is to make that Hell and those torments as quick, as slight, and as limited as possible. But it is not our power to end pain, to make peace, or to stop torture.
We cannot stop a Holocaust without inflicting pain. We cannot end the Gulag without hurting people. We cannot free slaves without the horror of civil war. We can be silent, passive, and helpless in the face of evil, and, perhaps, survive. But we cannot stop evil without fighting evil, and that battle cannot be conducted without hurting people.

Liberal fascism is what we have now. Obama is the true Hitlerite. Calling George Bush Hitler, was a ruse that the left employs constantly to its advantage. When Saul Alinsky began building his community-organization movement in 1930s Chicago, observers were watching Alinsky with one eye, while with the other eye observing the building of communist and fascist movements in Europe. It wasn’t hard then to see in Alinsky’s programs at home, elements of the people’s revolution from Russia, as well as some of the same “in your face” tactics being employed by Hitler’s Brownshirts.
What Alinsky’s critics saw was the burgeoning of a national movement, the carefully manipulated construction of people’s organizations, which all had two elements in common: (1) a collectivist creed, which denied the existence of personal responsibility; and (2) an amoral dogma, in which all means were justified by an imaginary utopian end.
