DAMASCUS, Syria — Al Nawateer restaurant is a place where dreams are bartered and secrets are kept.

Dining areas partitioned by thickets of crawling vines and knee-high concrete fountains offer privacy from informants and agents of the Mukhabarat secret police.

The Mukhabarat try to monitor the hundreds of thousands of Iraq war refugees in this ancient city, where clandestine human smuggling rings have sprung up to help refugees move on — often to the United States.

But the refugees who frequent Al Nawateer, gathering around Table 75 or sitting alone in a corner, are undaunted, willing to risk everything to meet a smuggler. They come to be solicited by someone who, for the right price, will help them obtain visas from the sometimes bribery-greased consulates of nations adversarial or indifferent to American security concerns.

Liberalism v Islamism

Many people think multiculturalism just means showing respect and tolerance to other cultures and faiths. If that were so, it should be unarguable. We should all support respect and tolerance. But that’s not what multiculturalism is at all. It holds that all minority values must have equal status to those of the majority. Any attempt to uphold majority values over minorities is a form of prejudice. That turns minorities into a cultural battering ram to destroy the very idea of being a majority culture at all. And so, since no culture can assert itself over any other, liberalism cannot assert itself as a dominant cultural force. Instead society must fragment into a kaleidoscope of equal — and opposing —values, and liberal values must give way to their opposite.

That is what happened over the Mohammed cartoons. Freedom of expression is a key liberal precept. But under multiculturalism, that cannot trump a minority faith which holds that to publish these images is to give offence. So the minority wins over the liberal majority value, and Europeans decry not the violence and intimidation, the kidnappings, riots and murder which followed the publication of the cartoons but the offence to minority religious feelings that was given in publishing them.

Multiculturalism has produced furthermore two particularly lethal effects. First, it has left all immigrants abandoned, and none more lethally so than young Muslims. For if there is no longer an overarching culture, there is nothing into which minorities can integrate. Many young Muslims in Britain, stranded between the backward Asian village culture of their parents and the drug, alcohol and sex-saturated decadence that passes for western civilisation, are filled with disgust and self-disgust. They are then given, in our multicultural schools and wider culture, absolutely nothing to educate them about or fill them with respect and affection for the western society of which they are citizens.

Rather scathing Op/ed of a retired USMC four-star general. I agree. Get off your ass and do something other than bellaching about how your belly would ache at the end of it all.

According to recently published reports, the Bush administration quietly approached several retired four-star generals last March about accepting a newly created position to coordinate military and political/diplomatic activity in Iraq. None accepted. One of those who refused was highly decorated retired Marine Corps Gen. John J. Sheehan, who was quoted in The Washington Post as saying, “So rather than go over there, develop an ulcer and eventually leave, I said, ‘No, thanks.’ ” How unreasonable indeed it was of the president of the United States to ask a retired Marine Corps four-star general — during a time of war — to do something hard, particularly at the risk of an upset tummy.

Pro-amnesty Hysteria

Well that didn’t take long. A liberal Washington Post columnist implicitly compared opponents of amnesty to Nazis today, while misrepresenting their position. Eugene Robinson writes that:

any serious attempt to drive them out of the country — even “temporarily,” so they could apply to be let back in — would be indistinguishable from a pogrom.
Would SWAT teams of immigration officers descend on neighborhoods and go door to door? Would they snatch children out of schools? Where would they take these people? To special camps? To the nearest border?

Pogroms were not the exclusive domain of the National Socialists, but that’s what comes to mind first. And even if he meant, say, pogroms in Czarist Russia, would it have been any more accurate? Those of us who oppose amnesty aren’t suggesting that we send SWAT teams into schools to round up illegals. Rather, we want the border guarded and immigration law enforced. We want a crackdown on businesses that hire illegal immigrants. We want illegals who are arrested for other crimes to be deported.

I am tired of the politicians in this country ignoring me and millions of others that feel the same way. The amnesty bill that the Senate has created is opposed by at least 80% of America. How the hell can these idiots in the Senate be so full of themselves?

I quit the Republican Party because they no longer represent me.

Here are the axis of weasels in this case: Sam Brownback, Lamar Alexander, Saxby Chambliss, Bob Casey, Susan Collins, John Kyl, The Republican National Committee, The Republican Senatorial Committee, John McCain, Elizabeth Dole, Richard Burr, James Webb, and Mary Landrieu.

I will oppose any party, any person who supports illegal immigration, amnesty, or any other threat to the soveriegnty of the United States.

Tomorrow is Armed Forces Day.

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department — the Department of Defense.

Let our troops know that you appreciate their service.
